FC Barcelona Transfer Rumors: Is the Marquinhos Deal Over?

With reports coming from Italy confirming that former PSG centre-back Alex will indeed join AC Milan next season, is it possible that the Marquinhos-Barcelona negotiations might not continue?

It has become a soap opera over the last couple of weeks. The Marquinhos Saga took a lot of twists and turns, and now there's another piece added to this unsolveable puzzle.

Former Paris Saint-German centre-back Alex has indeed joined AC Milan and is going to play in the Serie A next season, moving away from PSG after the French club signed David Luiz last week. Alex knew that he wasn't going to be a starter with the new Brazilian arriving, so he left and is probably going to play full-time at Milan.

But what does it have to do with Barcelona? A lot, actually. Since Alex has said goodbye, it's possible that PSG might not sell Barça target Marquinhos to the Blaugrana. Although the teams haven't agreed to a deal anyway, the negotiations might get tougher, since Marquinhos is now the only reliable bench option left at CB.

We reported last month that the negotiations between Barça and PSG for Marquinhos could include Dani Alves and cash, but even that becomes a long shot with this new turn of events.

Marquinhos is really young, and it seems weird that Barcelona are so sold on him, since he didn't win the second CB spot, always losing the battle to Alex. But his window of opportunity is almost closed with the David Luiz acquisition, and that could make him force an exit, especially with Barça not giving up on him and willing to include one of their most important players in the deal.

This thing is far from over, but the Alex move could be really, really bad for Barça. Maybe it's a good thing, depending on who you talk to. We can just wait for the next chapter.

What about you, Barça fans? Do you think Barça should continue to go after Marquinhos? Should they go after someone else?
