Romantically Apocalyptic Webcomic

Romantically Apocalyptic Webcomic

by Vitaly S Alexius

Charles Snippy finds himself lost and alone at the end of the world. He makes a wish for a friend and meets Zee Captain, an eccentric lunatic luminary, who drags him on an adventure through the eldritch, deadly, questionable and limitless post-apocalyptic world of tomorrow, a place where Goodness makes the rules and everything has purpose and passion.

~A post-apocalyptic, dark comedy webcomic that I've been working on since 2005 by myself at first and then with friends from all around the world.

I have been reading this comic since it began, nothing else is quite like it. The surreal imagery, the dystopian future cyberpunk storyline, the crazed protagonist and Zee Captain all mix to make one of my favourite web comics.

You have to see the images to believe it. Built from photographs of real people and locations and developed into the science fiction world which feels like it continues when you're not reading. I have re-read this so many times and always come back for any updates. Cannot praise this enough. Over the long time it has been online it has become a cult, I've even seen cosplay at Comic Conventions.

I know this fiction for too long). It was a ray of light inspired me in childhood and I'm happy to see it still growing and I love extended novel version, it changed simple funny episodes to something much more complicated and, honestly, looks like it was planned from start. At first it was short comic stories about guys in apocalypse. And when I understood, that I already love each of them, as a part of my life, story became serious and dear god I'm still here and they are still with me. This story has amazing and very original style. looks like Vitaly loves to write like he draws and I learned a lot with it  since he loves to use "rare" words sometimes I will not meet in textbooks. The story keeps me interested for many years, but for me the main thing is - characters. I really love them. I care for them. I can't imagine my life without captain poster I have near my bed. I can't imagine this world without them. And Captain is someone who always knows better and, somehow, I used to listen to his crazy opinions even in real life and what? it helps a lot).

To put it shortly – the story is very amusing. It is more then a typical post-apocalyptic story that other would expect. There are space wizards, a tetra virus judge, a funny pinapple, etc. All living in an insane (in a fun way) world. I‘ve started reading Romantically Apocalyptic a while ago on rom.ac and with all the mind boggling and weirdly cool things happening in the story it became my escape from reality. I hope new readers will have the same enjoyment reading RA as much as I did.

This is one of the better web comics out there: the art quality, the humor, the story are all top notch.  It pushes the boundaries of what a web comic can be with music and blogging.  Everything about this web comic is imaginative.  The humor is quite silly at times.  I highly recommend it.

Best read on the authors website, it's a monstrosity of a story. Part graphic novel, part written work, at one point there were audio clips even. It's a wildly creative use of digital media

The story follows the ever suffering Charles who is a competent guide surviving the wasteland. At his lowest point he meets a fever dream of a Captain and the adventure really takes off. Initially, you're not sure what's radiation induced hallucination and reality, but it all comes together really well

Beautiful art

This story is contantly being polished with each new platform it reaches. I've been watching this story grow since at least 2010 if not longer, and every time I come back to it, more lore, imagery, or interactivity with the fanbase makes this one of the most unique and beloved webcomics I've ever been fortunate enough to behold. Even now, I am so incredibly delighted to dive back in from the beginning, just to see what has been brought to the table since the last platform. And so far it has been absolutely fantastic.

From the start, there is a fantastic character dynamic. All four of the main characters have some way of grating against each other, and none of them are positive, making for great side stories as the main one unfolds gradually. There's also a way to explore each of them as individuals, even the enigmatic Captain can have a deep backstory. The introduction of the inhuman support characters only adds to the flavor of the human (though the definition of "human" can get a little rocky).

The grammar has gotten a lot more meticulous since it first came out, with each iteration making sure it caught the mistakes of the old versions. The writing style changes with every single character who is talking in the journals, and even without the color coding, it is very clear who is speaking, even with all the zany/crazy bag of goofballs that slowly fill the cast. At this point, any spelling or grammar errors are carefully placed in the story to match situations and quirks belonging to the "writers" of the entries to include AI, people with brain damage, or a combination of sorts.

At the same time that the story is silly and fun, the primary story is still a very serious one, and you have a lot of small strings to braid together in order to see it. It drops bread crumbs in plenty of places, and sometimes the character arcs open up a bigger portion of the aftermath of the universe's unraveling.

I haven't found a story quite as engaging or enjoyable as this one, either before or since. It truly is a unique tale, and I look forward to continued entries. This has been my number one recommendation for webcomics, and it certainly won't drop anytime soon. Keep it up, you guys.

A Binge-worthy Re-read

Reviewed at: 186. Doctor

Back in 2012, a friend of mine recommended the original comic and I set a course to read it all. About 2014 I fell of the path, and after a few years I suddenly thought "hmm, I wonder where the story went after I stopped reading".
To my surprise, after several years and a site change, the 'new and improved' RA just seemed to get better and better the more I read. There's more story and dialogue than there was in the original, and the characters seem to be more fleshed out that what I remembered.
I'm always blown away by the art, the story telling, and I'm enjoying the addition of characters, as well as how each chapter is told from different points of view.
Glad to be back on track with reading this majestic comic! Excited to see what shenanigans our beloved Captain and the rest of the group get up to down the road.

Honestly, this entire thing is a masterpiece, been reading for a while now, the details added to the art and colours just gives me an unexplainable feeling.
It helped me get crazy inspirations for drawings and much more!

I've read a lot of fictions but this one really seems to peak my interest the most, the characters are well created and so is the lore!
without a doubt would suggest it to my friends.

Honestly, I don't remember when I stumbled across Romantically Apocalyptic (2011? Maybe?), but boy howdy am I glad I did.

The art and colours are very excellent braincandy for those that like the vibrant pop of colour against the sometimes bleak, apocalyptic backgrounds and the blending of photography, painting, and image generation is gorgeous.

The characters are a lovely group. Zee Captain is a delightfully mad being of Pure Chaos, and Snippy eternally tired. Pilot is frighteningly loyal and terribly silly... Engie is. Well. Engie. Bit nervous, that one.

The story is all sorts of chaos and fun, but looking past the wacky shenanigans, there's a deep world of lore to sink into. Who are these four randos trapped in the post apocalypse? What do you mean [REDACTED] was made [REDACTED] on purpose?

The journals add so much depth to the story as a whole, and they're very well written. Plus, the choice of tunes paired to some of them really makes the mood.

Romantically Apocalyptic is a feast for... most of the senses. If you start tasting pineapple on a semi-permanent basis, or you feel like your face has gone missing, things have gone awry. Please try again.

Over all, 10/10, would recommend. Set aside a day or three and go to town.

I've been reading this comic on the original website for so long I literally do not remember a time that I did not read it. The story has been executed brilliantly and yet kept enough mistery to keep me hanging on. The characters are funny and excentric and the world seems like a place that could be a literal future. Can't wait to see where the characters and story end up going.
