Behind the horizon
An installation by Ief Spincemaille in collaboration with Wies Hermans. Starting from a childhood memory, Behind The Horizon wants to visualize the bending of the Earth. It is an attempt to look behind the horizon with a 10.832 km long tube. This tube was carried by 310 volunteers at the Belgian Coast on the 14th of May 2010. The middle of this tube is resting on the ground. Five km to the left and 5 km to the right of this center point, the tube is already 229 cm removed from the earth's surface. A straight tube hanging above a convex earth. A clearly visible and comprehensible image of the bending of the planet. More information on www.iefspincemaille.com

Bye! Hi!
WeUsAll

Theatre production WeUsAll by Sarah Vanhee was performed in Amsterdam in May and September 2009. Wies Hermans and Ief Spincemaille designed the stage and video installation. A huge shiny black screen fills the stage. At first, the screen hangs in the back of the space, and during 35 minutes, it moves slowly towards the audience, almost unnoticeably. The text that is projected is meticulously manipulated, with subtle rhythmical and graphical changes.

"Waanzinnige avonturen heb ik beleefd, terwijl de zinnetjes blijven oplichten op het scherm dat dichterbij komt en spiegelt en steeds dichterbij komt, net zolang tot we in onze eigen ziel kijken." - Lex Bohlmeijer

The Woman who Walked into Doors

The Woman who Walked into Doors is an opera for soprano, actress and video screen. The main role is played by a singer and an actress, the other characters are represented by text animations on the huge video screen. The screen acts as a window to the outside world. But also as a full partner, as an antagonist of the actors. The personality and behaviour of each character is translated into text layout and animation. An application was developed to control the animations live during the opera.

"Een ijzersterke voorstelling. Als opera een synthese van verschillende kunsten is, dan blijkt dit zeker uit The Woman Who Walked into Doors, waarin theater, muziek, literatuur en beeld gelijkwaardige ingrediënten zijn" - (De Standaard).

Directed by Guy Cassiers. Stage design by Peter Missotten, Kurt d'Haeseleer and Marc Warning. Text animation and coding by Wies Hermans. Produced by Ro Theatre and Het muziek Lod.
