NUG will never take sides on Yemen war: Abdullah

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Unity Government (NUG) has said Afghanistan will never support Saudi-led coalition on Yemen conflict.

Abdullah, however, said that the Afghan government will back Saudi Arabia if Kaaba—Muslims’ prayer direction is threatened, or else Kabul is not eager to back any other country in any war.

He expressed these viewpoints in response to a journalist’s query in an opening ceremony of a private higher education institute in Kabul the other day.

Abdullah said that as far as Afghanistan has been highly damaged by war and conflicts therefore the Afghan government urges Saudi Arabia, Yemen and other countries to overcome their differences through political negotiations.

The Presidential Palace recently issued a statement that Afghanistan will back Saudi Arabia in Yemen war, adding that the decision was taken after consultations with ulema—religious scholars, former jihadi leaders, security officials, analysts and elders.

A number of Afghan critics warn that Kabul’s support to Saudi Arabia against Yemen will change Afghanistan into a new ground for proxy war.

Samim Rahpaya, a Japan-based Afghan analyst, told Afghanistan Times that Afghanistan should not cross the line of neutrality in this regard, and should consider national interests in taking such decisions. He said the decision of the Afghan government to back Saudi Arabia in Yemen conflict is an urgent one which can lead the country towards crisis.

He prodded the government to change its decision and stay neutral towards the conflict between Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
