Week 4 @SFCD: futile/argument/burst

This past Monday was my 4th session with SFCD dancers. We’ve finally found something of a work rhythm.

There have been so many open-ended questions, or questions that have been open-ended forever in this process. As long as she has been around, there has been movement, but none of it has ever felt right. I kept searching through this vocabulary and that, and it always seemed inorganic. On Monday, I got an answer.

I started blocking a scene (inspired by a funny thing Rachel did last week) with the whole group. Then, with two pairs of doppelgängers (Chelsea & Madison, Amelia & Jane) I gave them separate tasks; these tasks would serve as contrast etc. to the main action of the scene. Chelsea & Madison worked to create something in total unison. Amelia & Jane worked to match their state, and have their connection be internal. I don’t even have to tell you which idea rang true, do I?

Once I hit upon this idea, I once again sat there, fought with myself about it being right because whether it was dance or not dance, had a couple of students look at it, and there was just no argument in the end, it was truth.
